As I sit at my desk this morning, I am thinking about what really matters.
Peace. Honest, clear communication. Showing respect for all people, and making an effort at mutual understanding. Curiosity, openness, and a willingness to learn. Kindness and compassion. A commitment to non-toxic, healthy ways of living and communicating. Courage.
These are my values — the axioms by which I live my life.
The election didn’t turn out the way I’d hoped. I’m frankly worried about the future. I’m troubled that so many of my fellow citizens were willing to elect someone I consider to be so dishonest, violent, and disrespectful. I do not believe the President-elect will be good for this country or for the world.
But it’s also clear that I underestimated the levels of anger and frustration in this country. The majority has turned sharply to the right — and it seems to be a widespread condition.
I don’t agree with the majority’s decision, but this is a democracy, and I will have to learn to live with it.
I will also have to learn new ways to oppose injustice and violence. I will speak up. I will remain active and attentive.
And I will continue to stand for what matters to me:
Peace.
Honesty.
Respect.
Curiosity.
Kindness.
Wellness.
Courage.
What about you?
